The development of the tourism sector in St Kitts and Nevis

We take a retrospective glance at the evolution of the tourism industry in St Kitts and Nevis – will 2024 be its best year yet?

The St Kitts and Nevis tourism sector has significantly grown during the 2023 to 2024 season, under the Honourable Dr Terrance Drew’s administration. With multiple initiatives to back the twin federation, 2024 will possibly be its best year yet. 

St Kitts and Nevis Press Conference 

The Government of St Kitts and Nevis have implemented a series of initiatives between 2023 and early 2024 that aim to improve and advance the tourism sector as part of its sustainable island agenda. 

During a press conference held on 13 February 2024, Honourable Dr Drew emphasised the country’s efforts to diversify the economy. 

The St Kitts and Nevis Minister of Tourism, Honourable Marsha Handerson, used the platform to share tourism brand awareness activities.

Expansion in the Tourism Sector

During the press conference, Honourable Dr Denzil Douglas announced a recent investment by Troy Property Investment Limited. 

The significant investment is aimed at expanding St Kitts and Nevis‘ tourism sector. Honourable Dr Douglas noted the Government’s efforts to attract new investments and announced the exciting new Hotel Indigo project. 

Troy Property Investment Limited will support this project by enhancing the hotel’s offering to its future visitors. 

Honourable Dr Denzil discussed Troy Property Investment Limited’s vision to establish a tourist village with a water park around Hotel Indigo, aiming to enrich the visitor experience in St Kitts and Nevis. 

Hotel Indigo, situated at Potato Bay, St Kitts, will feature 42 luxurious suites, conference facilities, gourmet restaurants, and much more which will create a premium sustainable hospitality experience.

St Kitts and Nevis Tourism Progress

On 14 February 2024, St Kitts and Nevis Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Tivanna Wharton, appeared on the country’s radio and television show, ‘InFocus’. 

Ms Wharton reported on the positive developments and initiatives taking place in the country’s tourism sector, attributing the achievement to diligent efforts. 

The twin federation received an estimated 133,000 tourists last year, signalling a promising trajectory towards pre-COVID levels. 

Government Collaborations and Initiatives

Ms Wharton highlighted the role of the current administration’s initiatives, including collaborations with marketing agencies, airlines, travel partners, and international organisations.  

These efforts aimed to promote unique destination experiences and strengthen relationships within the travel industry. 

Historical Voyage Makes a Stop for St Kitt and Nevis 

On 30 January 2024, the Icon of the Seas made its inaugural stop in the twin federation, arriving at Port Zante with over 5,000 passengers. 

St Kitts and Nevis was the second Caribbean country to receive a commercial visit from the cruise ship, highlighting the growing importance of the destination in the cruise industry. 

A cultural show was organised to showcase St Kitts and Nevis’ vibrant heritage to the visitors, with local officials present to witness the historical arrival of the world’s largest cruise ship. 

Basseterre Welcomes Cruise Ships

An additional five cruise ships docked in Basseterre, in early February 2024, signifying a proud moment for the country’s tourism sector. 

The arrival of these cruise ships is expected to positively impact the St Kitts and Nevis economy. This will be done by creating an opportunity for local businesses due to an increase in demand for services. 

The vessels that made their call to the island include Club Med 2, Aida Luna, Explorer of the Seas, and Evirma, with one ship initially postponed due to weather conditions. 

Government Commitment to Development

The Government reiterated its commitment to creating a sustainable environment for investment and tourism development to ensure the nation’s continued growth as a premier destination in the Caribbean region.
