In a statement to Authorised Persons, developers, International Marketing Agents, and other interested parties, Mr Les Khan, CEO of the Citizenship by Investment Unit, announced the Unit would, throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, commence application processing after having received due diligence fees and electronic versions of:
- the C1 Form
- a birth certificate or household register
- marriage/divorce certificate(s)
- consent letters
- passport(s)
- national ID(s)
- proof of address (utility bill)
- any applicable purchase and sale agreement
- any applicable escrow agreement
Mr Khan clarified that original documents must be submitted prior to an approval in principle being granted by the Unit – meaning that, ultimately, applicants will still need to go through the normal processes of notarising, legalising, and translating the documents they need to support their application. It is also clear that all documents normally required by the Unit, including criminal records, will need to be submitted in their original form.
Mr Khan also warned that, in some cases, “the processing time will be extended due to the late receipt of original documents, the delays caused by due diligence processes on the ground, and the clearance of funds by the Bank.”
What does this mean for me?
If your application is already with the Citizenship by Investment Unit, you simply need to wait. Normally, you would expect an answer on your application within 3 months of submission. However, you may be looking at a longer timeframe, especially if due diligence agencies find it difficult to perform their routine background checks.
If you still have to submit your application, collect the above-listed documents and send them to your Authorised Person. This will enable the Unit to open a file on you and start processing your application, thereby minimising delays. However, you will not receive a decision on your application unless you submit all required documents to the Unit (in both electronic and physical format).
